Report: Romney vows to dump federal stake in GM quickly

Filed under:

With a multi-volume list of issues that a presidential hopeful could discuss, we aren't sure why Mitt Romney keeps circling back to the auto industry bailouts, but here we are again. He's lately swinging his stick at the U.S. Treasury Department for not having sold its 26.5-percent stake in General Motors, accusing it of holding back on the stock sale to avoid having to report a multi-billion dollar loss before the election.

At GM's current stock price, the government would lose about $16 billion by sellings its 500 million shares, a number that hasn't much changed from several months ago. Romney said the government has "no reason" for not selling, and a report of his interview with The Detroit News says that "he'd sell the stock quickly if he wins the White House." A Treasury spokesman responded with "We have to balance maximizing recovery for the taxpayers with the speed of exit."

On top of that, Romney said that if he becomes POTUS, he would take another look at Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, believing that "The best approach is to try and build vehicles that people want, rather than having the government telling the companies what they must make." It's a line we've heard (and even uttered) often, but the nexus of government regulations, consumer desires, viable business models and long-term industry concerns is a moving target shifty enough to confuse quantum physicists.

Either way, it's clearly fair to expect more jabs from Romney at President Obama and the auto bailout as the campaign season grinds toward election day.

Red Bull plays down floor ruling

Red Bull motorsport chief Helmut Marko does not think the FIA's ruling over Formula 1 floor regulations will handicap Red Bull Racing at all in the Canadian Grand Prix. The reigning champion team will have to modify holes in its RB8's floor following a clarification issued by the FIA this week. Several of Red Bull's rivals had considered protesting its design during the Monaco GP weekend, which saw RBR's Mark Webber take the team's second victory of 2012

Cain Velasquez TKOs Antonio Silva in a bloody UFC 146 battle (PHOTO)

Cain Velasquez wanted to make a statement in his first fight back after losing the UFC heavyweight belt to Junior dos Santos. He did that with a bloody, first-round TKO of Antonio "Big Foot" Silva.

Velasquez caught a Silva kick and took him down right off the bell. From there, Velasquez pounded away at Silva's face, opening a massive cut on Silva's nose. The cut gushed a ton of blood, more than is usually seen during a fight. It covered Silva's face and body, coated Velasquez's arms, and gathered in a pool next to them. The bout was stopped for a doctor to check the cut.

Silva tried to shake the blood off as the doctor looked at the cut. After the fight was allowed to continue, Velasquez kept throwing bombs at Silva's head until the bout was stopped at 3:36 in the first round.

Dell reaches for the cloud with new prototype ARM server

Dell on Tuesday announced a prototype low-power server with ARM processors, following a growing demand by Web companies for custom-built servers that can scale performance while reducing financial overhead on data centers.

The proof-of-concept server is code-named Copper and is the first one from Dell that is based on the ARM processor. Dell will not sell the server, but will install prototypes at specific locations so customers can kick the tires around ARM, whose processor designs are found in most smartphones and tablets today.

Canonical tag teams with Humble, wraps up Indie Bundle installation with bow (video)

Love your Linux games, but hate painful installs? Ubuntu maker Canonical understands, and has kicked the usual, less snappy, procedure to the curb creating a new approach for the Humble Indie Bundle. The company already expanded Linux gaming, recently adding EA titles to its Ubuntu Software Center, and now you can download the Humble quintet from there as a single file, and install it in one go. In true open source style, you can pick the price you'd like to pay at Humble's site and even juggle how that sum is distributed to the games' developers and charities. So with the install obstacle gone, trundle on past the break and see if the promo video seals the deal.

Muller edges Menu in second session

World Touring Car Championship leader Yvan Muller produced a last lap effort to knock comic book character Michel Vaillante - or rather RML Chevrolet team-mate Alain Menu sporting contact lenses and dyed hair - from the top spot in the second free practice session at Algarve. Swiss racer Menu edged out Muller for first place shortly after the mid-way mark of the half hour session, recording a lap 0.071 seconds ahead of the triple world champion. The Frenchman left it until his last run to offer a response, but Muller's fastest time of 1m55.590s remained over a second slower than Lukoil Racing's Gabriele Tarquini's benchmark time from free practice one

Gallery: What 100,000 people are lining up (in frustration) to see at Yeosu World Expo

by Frances Cha

Apparently, visitors to the Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea, are like blind dates. You pray they'll show up, but when they do, you don't really know what to do with them.

Despite being riddled with global superlatives -- of the quirky techie variety, including biggest gathering of robots in the history of expos, the world's largest dome screen, the world's tallest robot and a laser-shooting robot fish -- the ocean-themed Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea, has had a rickety start the past few weeks in terms of attendance and operations.

Visitor turnout

The daily number of visitors to the Yeosu Expo -- located 455 kilometers south of Seoul -- finally reached 100,000 this past Sunday, mostly due to the three-day Buddha's Birthday holiday weekend.

The local press reported that the growing number of visitors served to highlight the shortcomings of the expo, especially in regards to advance bookings and lack of parking, restrooms and accommodations.

According to Korean daily Dong-A Ilbo, more than 1,000 visitors who could not reserve admission to the eight main exhibition halls filed for refunds on Sunday, while some facility operations were stalled when annoyed patrons caused a ruckus at an aquarium.

Wardrobe malfunction marks beginning of Karl Amoussou?s Bellator win

In the first minute of Karl Amoussou's fight with David Rickels, a wardrobe malfunction happened that could have derailed the whole night. Rickels threw an inadvertent kick to Amoussou's groin that snapped the strap that held up Amoussou's protective cup.

This caused a delay in the Bellator welterweight tournament semifinal in Louisiana. Referee Jason Herzog informed the state commission officials on what happened, then asked, "Can someone go to the back and see if he can borrow a cup?"

Now, fighters are usually generous people. They'll share training time, clothes and equipment. But a cup?

Luckily, the Bellator cut man figured out a solution. As shown above, he used athletic tape to secure Amoussou's cup, and all was well in the cage. Amoussou went onto win a very close decision over Rickels and will now face Bryan Baker in the welterweight tournament final.

Anderson Silva duels with sensei Steven Seagal over a beer (VIDEO)

Unfortunately, we don't get to see the end of their scintillating duel over mediocre beer. Does Silva rise up against the man who taught him the kick that knocked out Vitor Belfort? Do they agree the beer is mediocre, forget their feud and start singing with Bruce Buffer at the old timey piano? Does Dan Miragliotta find a hidden beer that he shares along with the secret to his always-glowing tan? There are so many ways this could end. Dana White: Brock Lesnar might want to come back

During the UFC all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146 on Saturday night, one of the promotion's best-known heavyweights was sitting in crowd. Brock Lesnar, who recently retired from the UFC and went back to a career in pro wrestling, was shown on camera. He was just there as a fan ... right?

Well, maybe. UFC president Dana White hinted there may have been more to Brock Lesnar's attendance than a weekend trip to Las Vegas.

"He texted me and said, 'I want to come to the fight, but keep it quiet because I don't want to tell anybody,'" White said. "He said, 'What are you doing tonight? ... I want to talk face to face.'

"You never know with him. He might want to come back. He might just want to hang out."

Lesnar's career in the UFC just had seven fights, but four of them had a title on the line. He beat Randy Couture for the belt in his fourth MMA bout, and appeared unbeatable after a title defense against Frank Mir. A bout of diverticulitis slowed Lesnar, and he lost to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem in his last two MMA bouts.

After walking away from MMA in December, Lesnar returned to WWE. His most recent matches featured a loss to John Cena and then a win over Triple H using a Kimura, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu moved he learned as a fighter.

Though he did lose his last two fights, Lesnar's talent cannot be denied. He was an NCAA Division I champion, bringing wrestling skills to the cage. He was also an unrelenting striker.

Though it's been just months since he left the UFC, he would be returning to a division that is stronger than ever. Junior dos Santos defended his belt against Mir and Velasquez TKOed Antonio Silva at UFC 146. Daniel Cormier just won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix and emerged as a contender for the UFC belt.

If his face-to-face talk with White does lead to a return, Lesnar won't get an easy fight. He will make the already-intriguing heavyweight division more interesting.

Video: Star Wars Prius commercial uses famous droids to sell Toyota's plug-in

c3po r2d2 prius plug-in

Help us, plug-in cars, you're our only hope.

In his original deal with Fox for the first Star Wars movie, George Lucas famously kept the licensing rights for himself. That deal - unusual at the time - has resulted in a huge pile of cash for the filmmaker and the ability for his iconic characters to appear on a seriously uncountable pile of merchandise, hawking everything from the 1977 Toyota Celica to today's Volkswagen Passas (to name just two car-related ones). The latest? The space-age Toyota Prius Plug-In.

Like many odd commercial pairings, this one was intended for the Japanese market. Translation of the ad done by friends of Green Car Reports says that everyone's favorite droids keep their know-it-all/ignorance-is-bliss dynamic in full effect. For example, when C-3PO first sees the plug-in hybrid's J1772 connector, he asks R2D2 if it's the little droid's charger. Goldenrod then asks, "You wanna recharge too?" To which R2 replies in his regular beeps and blorts and 3PO says, "Okay, me too!" They then have a discussion about range anxiety, which makes us wonder if Toyota is hinting that the next-gen Prius will come with Twin Ion Engines.

But you want to see this all yourself, right? Go ahead and do so for the next 30 seconds down below.

Reports of Intel's death are wildly exaggerated

If you've ever struggled through a skiing lesson, you know exactly what the expression "too far over your skis" means: You're headed in the right direction, but you're leaning so far forward you're going to take a tumble. And that's what's going to happen to my colleague Galen Gruman, who along with other pundits is falling all over himself to bury Intel under the oncoming ARM tsunami.
