The odd path Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis took to UFC 144

Two former WEC champions will appear on Saturday's UFC 144 card. Benson Henderson, the man who held the lightweight for more than a year, will fight Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight strap. Anthony Pettis, the man who took Henderson's title with the jaw-dropping "Showtime Kick," will take on Joe Lauzon.

Those MMA fans who have been living under a rock since December 16, 2010, when Pettis beat Henderson, might wonder how it's Henderson, not Pettis challenging Edgar.

[ *Watch UFC 144 right here on Yahoo! Sports ]

After winning the WEC belt in their final event before being absorbed by the UFC, Pettis was supposed to get the next UFC lightweight title shot. He was supposed to fight the winner of Edgar and Gray Maynard's New Years Day 2011 bout.

But Pettis was put on the backburner when Edgar and Maynard's bout ended in a draw. Their rematch was more important than unifying the WEC and UFC belts. Pettis opted not to wait for a title shot, and lost a decision to Clay Guida in June.

For Henderson, it was a win over Guida -- plus beatdowns of Jim Miller and Mark Bocek -- that earned him the title shot at Saitama Super Arena this weekend. No fighter wants to lose, particularly when his belt is on the line, but the loss to Pettis still bothers Henderson. His laid back strategy late in the bout still makes him angry. Was it the best thing to happen to him?

"It was heart-wrenching," he said to MMA Fighting's Ben Fowlkes. "I was sad, and I'm still sad. It was heart-breaking. ...Every time I'm out there, I give you guys everything. I open up my heart and soul. I hold nothing back. To come up short, and to come up short in that manner, that hurt. But I'll never let that happen again."

Even Pettis has noticed the difference in his former opponent.

"Ben was on a tear. He was killing guys in the WEC. Then I come in there, we go five rounds and I win the decision, and he was back to square one. I think a loss makes everyone a little hungrier, and that's what it did for him."

Pettis beat Jeremy Stephens in October. He will fight Lauzon early enough on Saturday's card that, if healthy, he can sit in the crowd and watch Henderson take on Edgar. At just 25, Pettis has plenty of time to get back to a title fight, and what could serve as better fuel than watching the man he beat take the title shot Pettis was supposed to get.

Tennessee fights canceled after liquor license denied

For good or bad, alcohol is a part of every MMA event. Whether it's fans getting liquored up in the stands or people flocking to bars to see pay-per-views, alcohol is part of the fight world. Fight organizers in Tennessee didn't want to find out what MMA would be without it.

Extreme Fight Night had to return $6,200 in sponsorship dollars after his permit was denied in Gallatin, Tenn. The city claims they didn't approve the permit because it was designated for non-profit organizations only.

"They (the attendees) will bring beer in their cars, they will be drinking in the parking lot ? we will have no control," said the company's marketing director, Christine Swartz, at the beer board hearing. "Whereas, if we sell beer within the venue, we have security; we can control that. If someone has more than one, or we think they're on the brink of a situation, we can physically have them removed."

The story ended well. Extreme Fight Night found another venue to run their fights that had beer. Fight fans had their cold beer in hand again. Phew.

Would you attend a dry fight? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Cathay Pacific premium economy class stretches out

by Hiufu Wong

Marking its foray into the "enhanced" economy-class trend that's been re-igniting passenger enthusiasm for long-haul travel, Cathay Pacific accepted delivery of a new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft yesterday.

Fitted with the airlines' new "premium economy" class seating configuration, the aircraft is the first of 87 planes Cathay plans to offer with the new class of service by the end of 2013.

Cathay Pacific premium economy class will be offered in a dedicated section with 26 to 34 seats. The section will be located between economy and business class areas.

Cathay Pacific premium economy features include more legroom than in economy class and a dedicated flight attendant for the section.

Noting that the cost of a premium economy ticket will be 50 to 80 percent higher than for a standard economy ticket, Cathay Pacific Chief Operating Officer Ivan Chu said that Cathay is stressing the "premium" over "economy."

HP, Intel rethink processor upgrades in servers

Hewlett-Packard and Intel are rethinking processor upgrades in servers, coming up with a new chip-slotting technique that could reduce the chance of errors, and ultimately prevent system failure.

The Smart Socket technology in HP's new Gen8 servers revolves around the integration of a clamp on the motherboard to mechanically upgrade processors. Instead of manually placing a processor inside a socket, a clamp with the processor can be pushed down on the improvised socket for a safer chip upgrade.

Pinball pioneer Steve Kordek dies at 100

Believe it or not, pinball (that most beloved of nerd pastimes) hasn't always looked this way -- a familiar field of bumpers with a pair of forward facing flippers at the bottom. That particular design originated with the 1948 title Triple Action, the work of Steve Kordek who died this week at the age of 100. Kordek is credited with a number of innovations to the analog arcade games, including multi-ball mode and drop targets. All told, the pioneer designed well over 100 different machines for Genco, Bally and Williams -- some of the biggest names in the pinball pantheon -- over the course of his roughly 60 year career. So, it is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a man that provided us with hours of entertainment and cost us plenty of quarters.

Face-recognizing billboard ad identifies gender: no boys allowed (video)

A new face recognition ad will only reveal its full contents to women. It uses a "high-definition" camera to scan people's faces, detecting their gender with an apparent 90 percent success rate. The charity, Plan UK, is looking to raise funds to sponsor education for girls living in developing countries; the outdoor display will run the full advert for female viewers, while men will get a brief glimpse followed by directions to the charity's website. It's aiming to demonstrate the limits put on young women in some countries -- and is a pretty admirable use of facial recognition technology. Well, it's not withholding pudding from minors. Check the bus display in action on the streets of London right after the break.

Mozilla rumored to debut LG-made Boot to Gecko device at MWC

Mozilla hasn't exactly been quiet about the fact that it has some big stuff to show off at Mobile World Congress. We've already gotten a peek at Boot to Gecko and it's announced it'll be joining the app market fray. But, what we haven't heard anything about just yet, is hardware. A mobile operating system and software outlet are only useful if you've got a physical platform to run it on. Now rumors are circulating that LG is in cahoots with the makers of Firefox and will be building developer hardware for its fledgling OS. Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich has said publicly his foundation will be at MWC with "partners..." plural. Who exactly those ally companies are isn't clear, but we'd say it's safe to assume there is at least one hardware maker in the mix. And, if the sources at ExtremeTech are right, that manufacturer already has a rather busy schedule. We'll just have to wait till we land Barcelona to find out for sure.

Honda recalls 2012 Pilot, Acura MDX crossovers over possible fuel leak

2012 Honda Pilot

American Honda is recalling some 8,709 crossovers due to a possible fuel leak. The 2012 Honda Pilot and its upscale platform-mate, the Acura MDX, are affected by this recall, which is expected to begin in mid-March.

2012 Acura MDXAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vent shut float valve cases in the fuel tank assemblies of these vehicles does not meet proper design specifications. Because of this, fuel could leak from the tank, increasing the risk of a fire.

Four other vehicles - the Honda Accord, Odyssey, Ridgeline and Acura ZDX - also share at least some of their underpinnings with the Pilot and MDX, but they are not affected by this recall.

Earlier this week, Honda issued a recall on the 2008 and 2009 model year Odyssey minivan due to liftgate struts with improper gas compression. Over 45,000 minivans are included in that recall, and according to Honda, two injuries have been reported as a result of the liftgate issue.

Follow the jump to read NHTSA's full report about the Pilot/MDX recall. Concerned owners can contact Honda directly at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.

Instant analysis: Nick Diaz?s positive test, what should happen next?

It's not the first time Nick Diaz and a state commission have battled over his marijuana use, but this time it could be a trend setter.

Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole broke the story that Diaz tested positive after his fight at UFC 143. If his penalty mirrors the one boxer Matt Vanda got last week from the NSAC, then Diaz will be fined $80,000 and be given a one-year suspension.

Is that fair? Should a violation for a marijuana test be the same as steroids? Iole reacted just minutes after the story broke on Las Vegas' ESPN1100/98.9 FM.

UFC president Dana White released a statement on the Diaz slip:

"I am beyond disappointed that he tested positive for marijuana," White said in the statement that the UFC distributed to the media. "It is now in the hands of the Nevada State Athletic Commission."

ZTE to unleash eight new phones at MWC, hopes multi-core chipsets and LTE push them into third place

The new handsets will reportedly flaunt multi-core processors, LTE radios and the latest versions of the Android and Windows Phone platforms. This announcement both echos and one-ups the recently announced Mimosa X, which gets its dual-core chops from an NVIDIA Tegra 2, but boasts only HSPA+, rather than the promised LTE. ZTE says it hopes the new devices will help it become one of the world's top three handset providers by the year 2015. Seem far off? Don't worry, at least the phones will be here by Monday. Apple: developers now have until June 1 to sandbox apps for the Mac App Store

Back in the fall, Apple gave developers an ultimatum: sandbox your applications, or see yourself out of the Mac App Store and sell your apps elsewhere. Originally, devs had until March 1st to make the change, which limits the resources apps can access, thereby making a malware infection less likely. Still, sandboxing inherently means less control for developers: the fewer resources an app can use, the less it can actually do. Well, code monkeys, you've now got a few more months to decide which camp you'd rather be in: Apple has extended that deadline to June 1st. As MacRumors notes, the move comes amid mounting concerns from developers, who have been complaining of bugs and other issues associated with the sandboxing process. In a statement on its developer site, Apple gave a pithier explanation, saying it wants to give devs more time to make use of new sandboxing entitlements available in OS X 10.7.3, along with new APIs in Xcode 4.3.

Single atom transistors point to the future of quantum computers, death of Moore's law

Single Atom Transistor
Transistors -- the basic building block of the complex electronic devices around you. Literally billions of them make up that Core i7 in your gaming rig and Moore's law says that number will double every 18 months as they get smaller and smaller. Researchers at the University of New South Wales may have found the limit of this basic computational rule however, by creating the world's first single atom transistor. A single phosphorus atom was placed into a silicon lattice and read with a pair of extremely tiny silicon leads that allowed them to observe both its transistor behavior and its quantum state. Presumably this spells the end of the road for Moore's Law, as it would seem all but impossible to shrink transistors any farther. But, it could also points to a future featuring miniaturized solid-state quantum computers.

'Breaking Dawn' DVD Sells 3.2 Million In Two Days

'Part 1' of 'Twilight' finale also racks up 50,000 downloads and 80,000 video-on-demand transactions.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 DVD is, unsurprisingly, flying off the shelves. After the film was released to disc at midnight Saturday morning, it reportedly sold 3.2 million discs over the course of two days.

But, that's not all: The flick also snagged 50,000 downloads and 80,000 video-on-demand transactions during the two-day period when the sales were tracked, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The numbers make "Breaking Dawn" the top-selling release so far this year. It bows at #1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall disc sales chart, followed by "Lady and the Tramp" and "A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas."

Now that it can be played on repeat, Twihards are certain to be memorizing every sweet and saucy moment of "Part 1" before the final installment hits theaters this November. A scene from the Bill Condon-directed "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," played at a special Target in-store event just before "Part 1" dropped.

Fans were treated to five minutes of footage, including behind-the-scenes shots of "Twilight" hunks Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner preparing for battle in the woods. The exclusive scene followed Bella as she finds a note in a book with instructions from Alice, explaining what to do to get new passports.

The clip then cut to an emotional conversation between Edward and Bella, who share a juicy kiss. But, perhaps the scene fans most wanted to sink their teeth into was the first shot of vampire Bella, which included those famous red eyes and special-effects-aided speed.

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1."

Best of Rio de Janeiro

by Joe Robinson

Travel fantasies don?t always live up to the reality, but the ?marvelous city,? as Rio de Janeiro's citizens call their beloved hometown, can knock even the most jaded travelers off their seen-it-all perches.

Dress appropriately, it can get extremely hot in Rio.The marvels range from singular settings -- primo beaches surrounded by jungled slopes and granite monoliths -- to some of the best music on the planet, to a lifestyle that invites all to slow down and sample life at a beachside kiosk, sidewalk bar or juice stand.

Famed for girls from Ipanema and Carnaval, the best of Rio is all that but a lot more.

The party goes on year-round in the cultural heart of Brazil, from the samba renaissance in the Lapa District, where you can choose from an array of great clubs, music and restaurants; to Carnaval rehearsals at local samba schools that redefine the word ?celebration.?

As it prepares for the Olympics in 2016, the city has launched a massive security program that?s finally addressing long-standing safety concerns. The best of Rio beaches of the Zona Sul are heavily patrolled and many other areas -- especially those troubled by crime and drugs -- have been cleaned up.

Williams sure FW34 a step forward

Williams is convinced this year's car is a clear step forward compared to last year's challenger, with which the team struggled most of the season. The Grove team endured its worst ever Formula 1 season last year, scoring just five points on its way to ninth place in the standings. Williams is hoping to revive its fortunes with the new FW34, with engineering chief Mark Gillan adamant that the car proved to be stronger in the first test at Jerez.

Auraslate opens Android tablets up to developers, welcomes mischief

HTC aside, not every manufacturer is willing, ready and committed to opening up its device portfolio to the idle hands of hackers. Which is why Auraslate, a recently launched start-up, is stepping in to fill that void, instituting a sea change in how devs translate their unsanctioned software concepts into actual end user products. To do this, the humble outfit's offering up 7- and 10-inch Android tablets that range in price from $139 to $270 and come loaded up with an ARM Cortex A9 CPU, 4GB storage and a Gorilla Glass-coated capacitive touchscreen. Prospective haxxors can choose between two configurations available on the site: an Advance Development Kit which includes a source code disk and a cheaper Novice option. For the money, you'll get that aforementioned hardware, peripherals (usb plug, power adapter), as well as access to Aura's forums and ROM refreshes, although ICS is limited to its top shelf Lifepad 1026. So if you're tired of damning the Man with every OEM-issued, security-patching update and just want to be left to your coding best, it might be wise to bask in this company's glow.

Dustin Poirier schools young Max Holloway with wicked submission at UFC 143

LAS VEGAS -- Dustin Poirier dealt with Max Holloway's standing onslaught for close to two minutes. That's when he had enough. Time for Plan B.

Poirier took the fight to the ground and taught the 20-year-old a lesson. He mounted him, tried an armbar, switched it to a triangle and then wound up getting the submission finish with a nifty armbar from a topside triangle at 3:23 of the first round at UFC 143.

Give Holloway some credit. He took the fight on less than a month's notice against a guy who's one of the brightest prospects in the division. Poirier's finish is currently the lead candidate for Submission of the Night. That could be good for $65,000.

UPDATE: Poirier got the nod for Sub of the Night and the $65,000.

"I never underestimated Max. I was in his shoes before. He's a tough fighter and good kickboxer. He was quicker than I expected though and hit me with a few shots," Poirier said. "I came here to get a win, and I got the finish. I'm one step closer to being a champion."

Holloway's standup attack was pretty slick.

Working behind both hands, some flying knees and plenty of kicks, he had Poirier on his heels. Poirier went for his first takedown with 3:06 left. He got it easily and lifted the slim Holloway into the air before slamming him to the floor. He moved to mount immediately. Poirier simply overpowered Holloway on the ground pinning his arms down on several occasions.

Braving Shanghai's snake hot pot restaurant

by John Coughlan, Sean Hanratty

From nose to tail, Chinese cuisine has long featured dishes that use all parts of all types of creatures.

The southern province of Guangdong is especially known for its peculiar food culture. Extreme cases are monkey brains and a recent report of braised koala.

In Shanghai, a visit to hot pot restaurant Jin Long She (???) confirms that China?s most sophisticated city is no slouch when it comes to adventurous eating.

Snake hot pot in Shanghai

Jin Long She?s draw is snake hot pot.

In some parts of China, consumption of the slithering reptile is thought to increase male virility. And while female diners at Jin Long She (literally, Gold Dragon Snake) are welcome, they should be advised that dining here means being subjected to shameless though lighthearted sexual innuendo.
